CHEDEL FAMILY
The name has been variously spelled as Cheadle and Cheedle as well as Chedel.
George Chedel, with his brother, came from England and settled in Connecticut
and married Martha Hall. The family were in Ashford, Conn., where their
children were born. At least three of their children, John, Asa and William,
came to Vermont. John Chedel, with his family, came on foot from Connecticut,
drawing on hand sleds their few possessions and arriving in Pomfret, March
12, 1770, three days after Bartholemew Durkee, the first settler arrived.
It seems the families started from Pomfret, Conn., together but Chedel was
delayed three days in Springfield and missed by that much being in town
with Durkee. Asa and William Chedel, brothers of John, came to Pomfret in
1775 but William immediately moved into Barnard and became one of the first
settlers of the town. Asa Chedel soon came to Barnard and was deacon of
the Congregational church. Thompson says he was here in 1775. He was counted
a resident of town, May 2, 1777, when he bought lots No.4 and No.6 near
the center of the town. February 7, 1791, he bought one hundred acres from
Stephen Pool and July 25th following he bought lot No.23 from Joseph Thurston.
September 5,1792, he sold one hundred acres to Nathaniel Richmond. Some
of this land was on the side of Mt. Hunger, near the Richmond-Tucker place
and probably to the west of that. Asa Chedel, Jr., bought of Joseph Foster,
April 1, 1785, lot No. 118 "in the westerly part of town" and
sold the same to John Gambell, March 3, 1791. This became the Gambell farm
on Mount Hunger. Asa, Jr., had previously bought, October 18, 1790, lots
No.107 and No.108. William Chedel bought lots No.36 and No.37, bordering
on the pond, May 2, 1777, at which time he was counted a resident of Barnard.
He sold this land on May 6, 1780 and the same day bought one hundred acres,
parts of lots No.10 and No.11, on which he continued to live. His homestead
was on the road from the head of the lake to the General Foster farm. It
was in his house the first town meetings were held, being held there for
the first three years of the town's existence-from six to ten a year. We
are indebted to the late Dr. Gardner Cox for locating the place through
a descendant of Thomas Winslow who once lived in the house near the head
of the pond. She said the William Chedel farm house was on the road from
the head of the pond to the General Foster farm and was the first house
up the hill. There is a short piece of wall on the left-hand side of the
present road, running out into the pasture and having no present reason
for being there. This was a part of the wall beside the old highway which
led from the old yellow meetinghouse on the common. The road has long been
abandoned. Its course can still be traced at various places by means of
the abandoned walls. The road by the side of the lake is a modern invention.
A little way from the present road-perhaps fifty feet-and near this bit
of wall is the old cellar hole of the William Chedel house and the foundation
of the big chimney. This is near the height of land on the present road.
Probably no one now living in Barnard knows where the first town meetings
were held. Forty years after the first town meeting was held in his house
William Chedel became a town charge. His second wife survived him and is
spoken of as a very pious person who was always in her place in the services
at the meetinghouse.
