My Gr. grandfather , Arthur A. Dean , of Danielson built an ornate , fretwork
clock in 1908 . I have the clock which has been somewhat of a mystery for
many years , but I recently came to learn of a contest held by the Great
Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. for items fashioned from wooden tea cases .
I have seen a picture of a similar clock which was built for that purpose
. The contest was held in Providence R.I. in 1908 . Does anyone have more
info regarding this contest or know what newspaper archives might have a
story about it ?

I am searching for Avis Brown who was born in Killingly, CT on January 1,
1780. I am looking for her parents. One source I have shows that Stephen
Brown and Elizabeth Smith are her parents. I have found a Stephen Brown
in the Windham Co., CT 1790 census but no other information. Another source
says that Erastus Brown was her father. Do you have any other information
about this Brown family???
DEXTER/WATROUS
4/6/01 Betty Fredericks bbffrrpp@mediaone.net
Am searching for any and all information about the DEXTER families in Danielson/Killingly,
CT. My DEXTER line appears to be:
My Great-Great-Grandfather John Dexter b.1837 Killingly, CT (m. Mary Anna
Clark, b.1837, Westport, MA) His father: William Dexter b.1795 Killingly,
CT (m. Eunice Park) His father: Thomas Dexter b ????? (m. Leah Phillips)
I only found out one year ago that the couple who adopted my grandmother
when she was an infant were her grandparents. They were John and Mary Anna
(CLARK) Dexter. They adopted the baby girl in March 1892, while they were
living in Melrose, MA. The baby girl was born in February 1889, and was
given the name, Daisy WATROUS, at birth. Her adoptive parents changed her
name to Mary Anna Clark Dexter. The birth mother appears to be John and Mary's
Dexter adult daughter, who had the baby, without benefit of marriage. Unfortunately,
within the first year or so, Miss Dexter was killed in a train accident
while traveling. Mrs. Mary Dexter died in early 1899, and was buried in
Killingly, CT. Shortly after her passing, Mr. John Dexter took their granddaughter
(adopted daughter) (Age 11) .. to an orphanage in Boston and dropped her
off. She never saw him again. Mary Anna remained in the orphanage until
she was Age 18. It appears that John and Mary Dexter only lived in Melrose,
MA, from about 1890 to 1900. Mr. Dexter does not show up in that town after
that. Mr. Dexter was a real-estate agent and a Jurist. The family may have
been living in Boston, MA, before they moved to Melrose. I have no idea
how much longer John Dexter lived; he would have been about 62-64 years
old when he left Melrose around 1899/1900. And, I have no idea where he
moved to. There's always the small possibility he moved back to his home
town of Killingly. I have no idea of the first name of their adult daughter,
who is the birth mother of my grandmother. I have no idea when or where
the adult daughter was born, or where she went to school. But, if she had
a baby in early 1889, she was probably born around 1870, give or take a
few years. I also have no idea where she was buried. .... However, if her
mother was buried in Killingly in the spring of 1899, and the adult daughter
died around 1890-91, then I wonder whether the adult daughter and the mother
were buried in the same family plot. DEXTER FAMILY PLOT? If the family was
all buried in the same place, then the gravestone should report the names
of John Dexter b.1837, Mary Dexter b.1837, his wife, and their daughter
(unknown Dexter) b. ~1870. Also very curious how that WATROUS surname, given
to the abandoned baby girl, born to an unwed mother ...... fits into the
picture. Thank you very much for your time, Betty (near Lowell, MA)
