A Brief History of Raymond

In October, 1719, about eighty persons, chiefly of Hampton and Portsmouth, associated and obtained a grant for a township. The grant was given August 26, 1720. It was then called "Chestnut country". The town granted was ten miles square, and embraced, besides what is now Chester, Raymond, Candia, Auburn and a portion of Hooksett and Manchester. Settlements were immediately commenced by persons from Hampton and Rye, among the most active of whom were S. Ingalls, J. Goodhue, J. Sargent, Eben Dearborn, R. Smith and E. Colby, John and S. Robie. The town was called Cheshire in 1722. In 1750, a portion of Chester was set off to help Derryfield, now Manchester. In 1736, the part called Charmingfare was incorporated as Candia. In 1764, Freetown was disannexed and incorporated as Raymond. In 1822, another part was spared to help Hooksett. And finally, in 1845, the west part of Chester, called Long-Meadow, was incorporated as Auburn. Chester is, in a sense, the venerable mother of all these places.

Cheryl Dickey-Whitish I recently came into possession of a journal which I believe to be from Raymond, NH written by a man named

G. W. GOODRICH. This journal contains over 364 pages,(counting both sides of the pages, all filled with writing), and is approximately 8"X11". Thirty-three of those pages are actually glued into the back of the book. This journal covers from July 1, 1905 - January 4, 1910 and includes temperature readings, (highest and lowest), barometer readings and brief weather descriptions for each day. He even mentions the Northern Lights and an earthquake.
The days are filled with entries of a hard working farmer who picked and sorted apples for market, hunted for cows and their calves, mended harnesses, made maple syrup, got stuck in the snow with his sleigh, hived bees, took pictures and had a darkroom setup, plowed with oxen, dug a grave, burned moths nests, broke rocks and placed them in the wheel ruts of the road, mended his "moggasins", husked corn and churned butter among many other things.
The reason that I am writing is twofold.
First, the diary is packed with names of this man's friends and neighbors as well as people he took pictures for and did business with. I am sure that this would be an extremely interesting document for their relatives or local historians. I would be glad to compile a list of names and write to people inquiring about their relatives, etc. Eventually, I'd like to copy the diary and put it online.
Secondly, because I am interested, I would like to find out about this man who kept the diary. Since he mentions a negative of a photo he made 41 years before, and one day he noted the lowest temperature that he had recorded in 50 years, I believe this man to be at least in his 60s and possibly 70s at the time of the journal. Since he was still quite a hard worker, I don't think he would be any older than that.
Raymond is the town that is mentioned the most in the diary by far. There are other towns in New Hampshire and Massachusetts which he also notes. He takes trips to Massachusetts several times during the diary for a few days each.
Can you help me to get in touch with someone who could help me find out about this man? Where I am, my hands are tied. I would also like to offer a look-up service, such as it is, for information from the journal.

The documents I have are either records in the family Bible that my sister in Maryland has or from notes put down by my father that "draw little on oral tradition and much more on genealogical data collected by earlier generations. My Grandmother GORRELL - née Emma susan TILTON (MGG's great-grandmother) wrote down what she knew in 1889, the year before she died. Her brother, my great-uncle George Henry TILTON (MGG's gguncle) wrote me several letters on family history before his death in 1930. A grandson of his aunt Mary Caroline TILTON, William Lawrence GREEN of San Francisco, California, finished in 1933 and sent me a list of the descendents of William TILTON in America...". Names in our family that my father mentions are: GORRELL (New Salem NH and also Methuen Mass), WHICHER (also WICHER, WHITCHER) SANBORN (Lee NH), ARMOUR (Northfield NH), CLOUGH (Epping NH), OSGOOD (Raymond NH), FOGG , FORREST, GALE (Exeter), EASTMAN, BOYNTON (Newbury Mass), LADD, HAM, COOK and of course, a whole slew of TILTON's and BACHELDER's. I have given some town names when known.
