Abner Palmer Smith was born on September 21, 1817, at

at
Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington, and was buried there in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Abner Palmer Smith married Alma Lilley on March 2, 1842,
at Ashford [VB]
by the Rev. Francis Williams of Eastford. She was born on June 8, 1816,
at
Union, Connecticut, and it is believed that she was a daughter of Jonathan
and
Elizabeth Lilley. She died April 8, 1880, at Pomfret, Connecticut.
Alma Lilley's parents were not recorded. A note in the
Smith Family Bible
in Gladys (Smith) Barlow's handwriting says that Alma Lilley's parents were
John
and Betty Lilley. An analysis of the census data for 1820 through 1840 for
the
region in Connecticut and Massachusetts around Union, Connecticut, shows
that
there was only one Lilley family with a daughter of Alma's age. Jonathan
Lilley
was recorded at Union in the 1810, 1820 and 1840 censuses. It is on this
evidence that Alma Lilley's parents are given.
The children of Abner and Alma Smith were:
i. Samuel Henry Smith, born October 15, 1843, at Charlton, Massachusetts.
ii. Abner Palmer Smith, Jr., was born in 1845 at Ashford,
Connecticut. He
never married. He served in the Union Army in the Civil War. He enlisted

He was promoted to Corporal on May 28, 1865, and was discharged at Harpers
Ferry,
Virginia (now West Virginia), on June 27, 1865. He died on June 2, 1899,
at age
54, probably at the State Soldiers Home at Chelsea, Massachusetts, and was
buried
in the New Abington Cemetery at Pomfret, Connecticut.
iii. Prudence E. Smith was born in September, 1848,
probably at Ashford,
Connecticut. She married first ---- Hall, probably shortly after June 1,
1870,
and probably at Worcester, Massachusetts. In the 1880 census she was listed
as
either widowed or divorced, and living with her father and her children
at
Mansfield, Connecticut. She married second Merrit Terrill in 1893, probably
in
Connecticut. He was born in December, 1858, in Ohio [C1900]. He was a box
manufacturer [C1900]. He had been previously married and had at least a
daughter
Minnie S. Terrill, who was born in September, 1872, in Connecticut, and
who
married Frank S. Sweet in 1892. Frank S. Sweet was born in January, 1870,
in
Nebraska and was a railroad conductor [C1900].
iv. Caroline M. Smith was born on April 11, 1849, at
Ashford [VB]. She
died on July 13, 1850, at Ashford [VB] and was buried there in the South
Cemetery.
v. Frank A. Smith was born in 1857 in Connecticut [C1860].
vi. Alma A. Smith was born on July 4, 1860, at Eastford,
Connecticut. She
died on December 15, 1911, at Hartford, Connecticut. She married Albert
Nelson
Graves on February 10, 1888, at which time she was living at Windsor Locks,
Connecticut. Their child was Howard Dwight Graves who was born on September
8,
1891. Albert Nelson Graves was born on May 21, 1856, at Middlefield,
Massachusetts, and was a son of Dwight E. Graves and Mariette (Root). He
had
married first Ida P. Vrome on May 27, 1879.
vii. child, perhaps died young.
viii. child, perhaps died young.
ix. child, perhaps died young.
Abner Palmer Smith was a farmer and a shoemaker. In
the 1850 census he was
listed as a shoemaker living at Ashford. In the 1860 census he was listed
as a
farmer living at Eastford, Connecticut. In 1862 and 1863 he lived opposite
Zenas
Marcy at Woodstock, Connecticut.
Abner Palmer Smith served in the Army during the Civil
War, but he did not
leave Connecticut and he spent much of his service time in the hospital.
He
enlisted on December 21, 1863, at New London, Connecticut, for three years
into
Company G of the 18th Connecticut Infantry Regiment, Captain Horatio Blanchard,
company commander. This was the same unit that his son, Abner Jr., had enlisted
into the previous year and it is presumed that he had hoped to join his
son. He
was enlisted by Lieutenant Talcott and his enlistment records describe Abner
Palmer Smith as 34 years old, born at Ashford, 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall,
light
complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, and a mechanic. He was listed on the
November-December, 1863, muster roll of the Detachment of Recruits at Fort
Trumbull, New London, Connecticut, and it was noted that he had been paid
a $60
bounty.
About March 1, 1864, Abner Palmer Smith contracted rheumatism
at Fort
Trumbull, according to his pension records. He was disabled for about four
weeks
and was in the Post Hospital until about April 15, 1864. In his pension
application he claimed that this caused his subsequent heart disease.
He was listed as a Private in Company G of the 18th
Connecticut Infantry
Regiment on the March-April 1864 muster roll. He was on the regimental return
dated April 11, 1864, and was on the May-June 1864 muster roll.
Abner Palmer Smith was listed on the muster roll at
Fort Trumbull on May
10, 1864, and it was noted that he had been paid $60 of bounty and that
$240 of
this bounty was still due.
Abner Palmer Smith was subsequently transferred to New
Haven, Connecticut,
where he served on Guard Duty at the U.S. Draft Rendezvous. In July, 1864,
he
came down with smallpox and spent four weeks and three days in the smallpox
ward
of the Post Hospital. Around the end of August or the beginning of September
he
was ordered back to duty. However, he soon "contracted some disease
of the
bladder or kidneys accompanied by gravel", according to his pension
application,
and he spent September and October, 1864, in the hospital at New Haven.
Abner Palmer Smith was discharged from the Army on November
17, 1864, at
the Knight General Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut, and he returned home.
Abner Palmer Smith lived at Woodstock, Connecticut,
from June 1865 to April
1868. From 1868 to 1869 he lived at Pomfret, Connecticut. From June 1869
to
November 1870 he worked at the Bay State Shoe Company, Worcester, Massachusetts,
and was listed in the 1869 City Directory as a boarder at 4 Burnside Court,
Worcester. In the 1870 Worcester Directory he was listed as living in a
house
at 37 Orange Street. On June 1, 1870, he was recorded living at Worcester,
Massachusetts, in the 1870 census.
Abner Palmer Smith moved to South Windsor, Connecticut,
and lived there
from November 1870 to April 1874. From April 1874 to April 1880 he lived
at
Pomfret. When his wife Alma died in 1880, he went to live with his daughter
Prudence at Mansfield, Connecticut. Sometime between June 1885 and November
8,
1888, Prudence and her father Abner moved to Nelsonville in Athens County,
Ohio.
He was recorded again at Nelsonville on February 19, 1892.
On April 17, 1896, he was recorded living with his daughter
Prudence at
2417 South C Street, Tacoma, Washington. He was unable to perform any manual
labor and was a constant sufferer from disease of the heart, kidneys and
urinary
organs, according to his pension application records. On June 1, 1900, he
was
recorded by the census living at 2512 South C Street, Tacoma, Washington,
with
his daughter Prudence.
Abner Palmer Smith died on May 17, 1902, at Tacoma,
Washington. His
