  2004-2005 Season
Notes Clinics Judging Updates

Welcome to the PA NAWGJ website!

Congratulations to the USA gymnasts. Our male and female athletes out did themselves at the World Championships in CA. With that inspiration lets work together to make Pennsylvania the most outstanding state this coming season as far as knowledgeable judges and talented athletes. Note, the most important word from congress was EXECUTION, EXECUTION, EXECUTION!! Best wishes for the new season.

Please call the gym, coach, athletic director, etc. Then call the assigner and let her know that you are unable to do the meet and see if she knows of a replacement. Also, call your carpool so they are not waiting for you. It is your job to notify the club that you will not be there.

In Bad weather - CALL THE CLUB!! The assigner is not responsible for cancellations.

It would be a good idea to have cell numbers of people in your carpool and the coach if you are expecting bad weather.

Happy Sledding!! Have a good winter and drive safe, Barb

The following is from an e-mail from Patty Vitale:

Dear NCAA Judge,

As you are all aware, the Collegiate Coaches Association (NACGC/W) has implemented a program of selection of officials for NCAA competitions, using an NAWGJ appointed assigner. This new system was implemented with a focus on trying to develop consistency in scoring.

The system was proposed and supported by the NACGC/W with the following rationale:

• To eliminate bias

• To eliminate the intimidation factor

• To develop consistency in officiating across the country

• To control costs

• To discontinue selection of judges by coaches and meet sites and events by judges • To create a system for impartial assignments for meets and events • To lay the groundwork for future development of an educational component.

The NCAA coaches have reiterated that they want consistent scoring with judges applying the specific NCAA rule modifications and all JO rules applied to their athletes in a fair and consistent manner as written. When accepting a collegiate assignment it is our responsibility to know and apply the rules. Mitigation of the rules ultimately means inconsistency from site to site.

Please remember these changes are being implemented to strengthen and support the collegiate programs and ultimately their athletes. It is imperative that the rules be applied as written in the Code of Points and in the JO Technical Handbook. Failure to apply the rules consistently across the country will ultimately be unfair to the athletes. It is also important that we judge the routine as performed on a given day or night.

We all know that even the most outstanding athletes do not give their best performance at every competition, we must judge the performance we see, not what was performed on another date.

The coaches have placed their trust in our abilities to apply the rules as written. We do it very well when we judge JO competitions. Please do not doubt yourself or the job you have been trusted to accomplish.

Best Regards for a wonderful judging season,

Carole Ide

From: Mike Lorenzen, President

National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women

There is a major change in the world of collegiate gymnastics that we hope will be a hugely positive step forward and we would like all of our fans to know about.

As many of you probably already know, the scoring in collegiate gymnastics is somewhat different than a typical JO meet, even though we follow Level 10 rules (with a few modifications in skill values and special requirements). It is not unusual to see many 9.8 and even higher scores in a college meet and the ultimate goal, the 10.0, is still very possible for the best college athletes.

So where does the difference in scoring come from? The easiest technical explanation is that college gymnasts usually have so much competitive experience that their routines have fewer deductions for execution and subjective things like artistry. Most judges also are a little more generous when it comes to taking execution deductions than they would be for JO athletes (eg: taking .05 instead of 0.1 for a particular mistake).

A serious issue in college gymnastics for a long time has been the fear of bias in judging and the concept of “home scoring”. College coaches have always had responsibility for picking and assigning judges to their meets.

Even though some have used an “assigner”, there has been a fear that this gives coaches the chance to influence judges or gives judges an incentive to favor a particular team who they enjoy judging. Since college team qualification for post-season depends entirely on the average of their regular season scores, anything other than perfectly fair and consistent judging can really affect each team’s rank at the end of the year and their ability to qualify for NCAA Regionals.

In order to make things as fair as possible we have put in place a National Assigning System for the first time ever. Schools participate voluntarily this year and it will be mandatory next year. This means that 12 regional assigners will assign judges to every college meet and coaches will no longer have any say over who judges their meets. We’re very grateful to the National Association of Women’s Gymnastics Judges (NAWGJ) for taking this project on and we believe it will make a positive impact right away.
