The Late Late Late Late Late Show

While they're not really examples of Ernie's own brand of comedy, quite a few of the 9 movies Kovacs made from 1957-1961 are entertaining and funny, particularly Operation Mad Ball, Our Man in Havana and Bell Book and Candle. They show what a good actor Ernie was, regardless of the script of part.  An interesting 10 minute production short fromt he making of It Happened to Jane was turned up by a collector a few years ago.  Called It Happened To Ernie, the short -- narrated (and written?) by Kovacs -- shows him getting his head shaved for the part by Jack Lemmon in a New York barbershop.  A short clip from this was used in the A&E Biography, Please Stand By (see our Ernie on Home Video page).

Ernie had planned a feature film featuring his "Eugene" character that he had hoped would star Alec Guinness.  There are no notes or scripts known to exist on this, but Ernie described scenes and gags he'd cooked up for it in an interview he did for the CBC in 1960.  (see our 1960 CBC Interview with Ernie page).  He'd also made a couple of short films for his earlier TV shows.  Two that exist in Edie's vast archive of material -- Baseball Film (1951) and The Mysterious Knockwurst (1953) -- were done inthe style of silent films and run about 4 minutes each.
