Admit One Passing Stranger

During the mid-1950s, Ernie Kovacs' shows were done in New York, and were broadcast nationally.  The network demanded he have a live studio audience, something he had not used up to that point.  Kovacs was opposed to having a live audience, as his comedy was visual and designed to be watched on a TV set.  And so, he had the tickets for his show printed up with the words "Admit One Passing Stranger" on it.

"I'd like to thank you all for inviting me into your living rooms this evening. It's just a shame you didn't straighten up a little."

"Television is often called a medium because it's so rarely well done."

"There is currently a formula for success in the entertainment medium, that is -- beat it to death if it succeeds."

--Ernie Kovacs
