This solver package installs a Dissolve solver into the Solvers - Spatial Analysis menu of Manifold System Release 4.50. Dissolve is so named because it "dissolves away" or removes the borders between areas that have identical values in data attribute fields. Given a set of areas, it can automatically create new areas that are spatial combinations of areas having the same data attributes.
For example, the map at right shows US counties in several states surrounding Massachusetts. Each county is a polygonal area that has several data attribute fields such as its Name, the State in which the county exists, a FIPS code for the state/county and so on. The lighter region shows the counties we have selected for use with the Solver.
Our
task is to combine all counties having the same value in the ST (two
letter State name abbreviation) field to create new areas.
Manifold's Dissolve solver is easy to use. It's completely Windows driven for simplicity and ease of use. The dialog at left shows the main solver dialog. We can double-click into the Match box for any of the data attribute fields and change the Match requirement to Yes to use that field in the dissolve operation.
In the example, we will use the state
abbreviation field, ST, to match areas to be combined into one. We
will not use any other fields. However, if desired in a more sophisticated
Dissolve operation, we could specify a Match on more than one
field. In that case, we could change the Match: option box from
either "all fields" to "any field" to combine
on a match on any field or force a match on all data attribute fields before two
areas are combined into one.
The Inherit option says how the newly-created area should inherit the data attributes of the areas that were used. Other choices for numeric fields include Min, Max, Avg and Sum. For example, Sum would place the sum of the data attribute values for that field into the same field for the newly-created combined area polygon.
When we press OK, the Dissolve solver goes to work and creates new
area polygons in the active layer that are combinations of the areas used as
sources.
In the example, we have created new areas that are the county areas combined by the ST field. This combines all counties with MA together, all CT counties, all NY counties and so on. The illustration at right shows the new areas drawn in the same color for simplicity. The image at left, below shows the resultant areas colored in different colors.
