Elijah's Cup As the wine glasses are filled a fourth time, we fill an extra cup which is set aside for the prophet Elijah. We are told that Elijah is the precursor of the Messiah. According to legend, Elijah wanders unceasingly through the world, awaiting the moment when he can make his identity known. We open the door as a sign of welcome to Elijah and sing his song, as a sign of our determination to do all we can to fulfill his hope of a world of freedom, justice, and peace for all people.
