** "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe: Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.. I watched sea beams glitter in the dark near the terhausen gate.. All those moments will be lost in time..like tears in the rain...

Please do not mistake this forthright discussion as disparaging a deceased shipmate, or his loved ones. Those whom we will leave behind had loved us dearly in life, and will love us afterward. However, they may not feel as strongly about our collected Navy memorabilia as we did. Spouses, children, close relatives, good friends; in this time of grief, are often perplexed as what to do with the collected items of the deceased. Therefore, collected artifacts may hastily be disposed of, only to drop out of our sight and memory. This is like a masterpiece of art, which should be on display for everyone to see, reflect upon, and enjoy; being sequestered in a private collection. We need to address this matter by initiating a meaningful program to ensure the identification, collection, preservation, and display of our historical submarine memorabilia. |

As the long time keeper of the "Eternal Patrol" watch list (see our IN Memoriam Page) and a prospective watch stander, a few years ago I began pondering the disposition of our shipmate's USS Halibut (et al) memorabilia. The pages of E-Bay (estate sales, yard sales, and flea markets included), are replete with the prized and loved possessions of deceased veterans- even some Mare Island Naval shipyard men and certain civilian contractors, with strong ties to USS Halibut: Historically significant artifacts like USN Ships Bells- Ships Plaques- Builders Plaques, Flags and Pennants- Commissioning and Decommissioning Plaques- Patches- Original Presentation items (in metal or on paper, etc.)- perhaps a Flag from a famous Admiral's visit- a Totem Pole- even things you made yourself. I am sure that y'all understand the type of artifacts, which I mention here. |
This will be a long term project: Once initiated, it is something which will not be completed in a few months- possibly even years. There are many problems to overcome in pursuit of our goal. Now there are some ideas to be firmed up, We will do that with this Web page. Please mull over some of the ideas established in these pages. *I have establish an exclusive e-mail address for addressing our project.* |
*Please use this e-mail address only for Project Artifacts Recovery business- only Fwd. e-mail relevant to the project.
