Meanwhile, Doctor Julia Hoffman, a leading blood specialist, has been investigating the blood samples of the victims. She has detected a distructive cell in the samples and concluded that the creature responsible for the attacks might be curable. Stokes had scoffed at her theory, insisting that vampirism is not a disease but the curse of the Living Dead. After she discovers that Barnabas is the vampire, she sets out to the Old House to confront him at dusk. Armed with only a cross, she informs Barnabas of her belief that the extraneous cells keep him the way he is, and once more, she has devoloped a way to destroy those cells. Desperately weary of being confined to the darkness for almost 200 years, Barnabas accepts Julia's offer.
Julia begins a series of injections. Soon she is pleased to inform Barnabas that the absence of attacks has caused Stokes to conclude that the vampire may have disappeared. But there is also another development that Julia doesn't even admit to herself - she is falling in love with Barnabas. Barnabas, however, continues his attentions toward Maggie, leading Willie, who fears that she may meet the same fate as Carolyn, to cryptically warn Maggie to leave Collinwood. Having also been alerted to the impending danger, Stokes is astonished to see that Barnabas can appear in the daylight. He confronts Julia as the only one possible to have accomplished the feat. Perceiving that Julia is in love with Barnabas, Stokes warns her that Barnabas' only interest is Maggie. After Julia witnesses their affection for herself, and then learns that Barnabas plans to marry Maggie, she decides to give Barnabas an overdose of serum, which causes him to rapidly age to his true years. In retaliation for her betrayal, Barnabas strangles Julia as she prepares to leave Collinwood. When Maggie bursts in upon the scene, he reverts and attacks her, and before escaping, he promises to return for "Josette." Stokes thereafter finds that the Old House is abandoned with no signs of Barnabas and Willie. He and Roger research the 18th century Collins Family history and learn the planned marriage of Barnabas and Josette never took place due to Josette's mysterious death. Stokes proclaims that he fears that the next evening, the anniversary of Josette's death, Barnabas intends to take a bride.
That night, by way of a secret panal, the aged Barnabas slips into Maggie's bedroom at Collinwood and overpowers her guard. Upon attacking Maggie again, his youth is restored. When Jeff goes to look in on her, all he finds is Maggie's blood stained pillow.
Fully aware of the threat they now face, the sheriff arms his men with silver bullets in their guns and begins an all out search for Barnabas. After receipt of a message from Roger and Stokes that instructs him to go to St. Eustace Island, Jeff sets off in the desperate hope of saving Maggie before it is too late ...
