Addressing Angelique, Strack instructs, "Prepare yourself for eternity, witch!" After raising his arm above his head, in a signal to the men atop the platform, Strack lowers it commanding, "Let the devil take his own!" At the signal, the men push Angelique off of the platform. AS THE ROPE GOES TAUT, HER BODY JERKS TO A SUDDEN STOP. CHARLES TURNS AROUND AND LOOKS UP AT SARAH'S WINDOW. Upon seeing Angelique falling from the platform, the horrified girl reaches her hands to her face and screams. Charles then turns away. AS THE WIND HOWLS, THE MEN SLOWLY PULL ANGELIQUE'S BODY UP. HER GHASTLY DISTORTED VISAGE BETRAYS ALL THE AGONY THAT WAS HER DEATH. UNABLE TO LOOK ANY LONGER, CHARLES TURNS AWAY FROM THE SIGHT AND BEGINS WALKING WITH A PRONOUNCED LIMP TOWARD COLLINWOOD. THE OTHERS SOON FOLLOW AS one of the servants begins to climb the ladder up to the platform. (Deleted portion written in capitals.)
