QUADRUPLE VICTORY OVER VACCINE BUREAUCRATS AND
DRUG CORPORATIONS. The Clinton bureaucrats have just issued
four surprising and sensational statements. (1) Cancellation of
recommendation that newborns be given the hepatitis B vaccine. On
July 9, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) and the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a joint statement canceling
their previous universal recommendation to vaccinate newborns while
they are in the hospital. They now recommend that the hepatitis B
vaccine be given only to newborns whose mothers have hepatitis B (a
tiny percentage). PHS and AAP continue to recommend that infants
get the hep B vaccine after the infant is 2 to 6 months of age, and
premature babies should not be given the vaccine until they weigh at
least 5.5 pounds. This retreat from the universal hep B mandate is
nothing short of sensational. It must have resulted from the
widespread publicity given to the damage caused by the hep B
vaccine that was aired in a segment on ABC's 20/20 and at the May
18 hearing conducted by the House Subcommittee on Criminal
Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, which heard from
parents of children who were injured or died from reactions to the hep
B vaccine, from scientists who questioned the evidence used in
mandating the vaccine, and from Barbara Loe Fisher, president of the
National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC). Mrs. Fisher had filed
Freedom of Information Act requests with the government to obtain
copies of the scientific data the FDA (Food & Drug Administration)
used to license the hep B vaccine and the CDC (Centers for Disease
Control) used to recommend that newborns be vaccinated when only
12 hours old.

(2) The same PHS-AAP joint statement revealed the risk of vaccines
containing mercury and called on the FDA to "assess the risk of all
mercury-containing food and drugs." A mercury product called
thimerosal has been used as a preservative in many vaccines since
the 1930s, and is specifically used in the vaccines for hepatitis B,
diphtheria, pertussis, acellular pertussis, tetanus, and HIB. Under
current CDC mandates, most infants receive a total of 15 doses of
these mercury-containing vaccines by the time they are six months
old, many given simultaneously. No reason was given for this
surprise announcement, and we can only surmise that there is
evidence of harm that has not yet been made public. NVIC has been
criticizing the use of mercury in vaccines for some 15 years. Current
stocks of vaccines containing mercury should be withdrawn.

(3) On June 17, the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices
(ACIP) voted to withdraw its recommendation for the use of the oral
poliovirus vaccine (OPV), and to recommend the "exclusive" use of
the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV). Since 1979, the only polio
cases in the United States were caused by the OPV (because the
live polio vaccine taken by mouth travels through the child's body and
can cause polio in a parent changing the diaper), and NVIC has for
years been urging that use of the dangerous live OPV be
discontinued in favor of the safer IPV. The ACIP still demands that
babies get 4 doses of IPV, even though (according to Surgeon
General David Satcher, MD, writing in JAMA [the AMA Journal], Jan.
20, 1999) "The Western Hemisphere was certified by the World
Health Organization (WHO) as polio free in 1994, and no case of
polio has been reported in this region since 1991."

(4) On July 15, the CDC and the AAP announced the temporary
halting of use of the oral rotavirus vaccine, which is given to infants to
prevent diarrhea, after reports that the vaccine caused a bowel
obstruction in infants that requires surgery to repair. 1.5 million doses
of this live vaccine have been administered to infants since last Sept.
1. This is the vaccine that is supposed to make it safe to put infants
in daycare, where diarrhea is common.

The old Latin phrase is pertinent: cui bono? (who profits?). Eagle
Forum opposes mandatory vaccinations and believes that parents
should have the right to make these decisions for their children.
Eagle Forum was the first national conservative/pro-family group to
oppose the many dangers connected with a government mandate of
the hepatitis B vaccine for newborns.
