History was made in California as Pedro Martinez(5-1) tossed a no-hitter and
the California Angels defeated the Colorado Rockies by the score of 7 to
0.
Martinez was spectacular. He only walked one Colorado batter. What an
evening for the fans. They were on the edge of their seats from the 7th
inning on. With every out, the electricity in the air mounted. Martinez
racked up 11 strikeouts. California finished with 12 hits in the victory.
Mike Sirotka(1-3) was hit with the loss. He allowed 4 hits and 4 walks in 4
and 2/3 innings. Martinez was in a jubilant mood after the game. 'If I'd
known I was going to throw a no hitter I would have gotten a haircut!' he
said, much to the delight of the clubhouse gathering.
