Julian Tavarez carried a no-hitter into the 9th inning as the Colorado Rockies
defeated the Montreal Expos by a score of 2 to 0 at Olympic
Stadium.
Tavarez(1-1) was tremendous on the mound for Colorado. He allowed only 2 hits
and 1 walk in 8 and 2/3 innings. The right-handed Tavarez lost his chance
for a no-hitter when Bill Mueller singled with two outs in the 9th inning.
Montreal made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed
runs across.
John Riedling earned his 5th save. Chris Carpenter(9-5) was the losing
pitcher. 'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Dave and Gerard
said. 'It's bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you start
beating yourselves, that's really bad.'
