Mike Sweeney smashed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the red-hot Tampa Bay Devil
Rays destroyed the Detroit Tigers by a score of 17 to 3 at Tropicana
Field.
Sweeney was spectacular at the plate. The hometown fans showed their
appreciation with a standing ovation his last time at bat. He hit a
bases-empty home run in the 3rd inning, delivered a single which scored a run
in the 7th inning and clubbed a three-run home run (his 25th of the season)
in the 8th inning. Tampa Bay bats were hot in the 1st inning with 4 runs on
6 hits, the 7th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits and the 8th
inning when they had 7 runs on 6 hits. Overall Tampa Bay out-hit Detroit 18
to 5.
Jason Middlebrook(2-1) got the win allowing 3 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Ryan
Jensen(5-6) was hit with the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 7 hits in 1 and 1/3
innings.
Tampa Bay won for the 8th straight time.
