Scenes of Old Tallin, Estonia's Capital

At the center of Tallin's old "lower city" is a large open square,
ringed with shops, and lots of outdoor cafes.
The navy band was in town for the Song Festival and did a short formation display
Saturday morning in the old town square.
Completion of this imposing edifice -- the Estonian National Library -- became stalled during the Soviet era and was finished with volunteer labor as a demonstration of national pride.
We reached the upper city through this gate. A tower on the old city wall.
Symbol of earlier Russian domination, Nevsky Cathedral is well kept and was busy on Sunday morning. Churches abound -- this one on the shore and providing a lovely landmark.

All over the city we encountered groups of costumed or uniformed participants in the song festival. This one gave an impromptu performance in the town square.

A peaceful courtyard by the old wall.

Whimsical detail in gargoyles and towers. A memorial to those who died in battle.
Tallin's skyline is distinctive, marked by four very different towers
-- a view from our hotel room window.
Continue with the Estonian Song Festival.
