Linda
"He, She & It" by Marge Piercy, $5.99, paperback

Here is a provocative look into the future by one of our most thoughtful writers. Piercy explores questions of community, economics, love, artificial intelligence, and the potential of the internet, all entwined in the engrossing story of Shira Shipman, a young professional who dares to challenge the corporation to which she and her ex-husband were contracted for custody of her child.

Good Enough Daughter

"A Good Enough Daughter" by Alix Kates Shulman, ($23.00, hardcover) Alix Kates Shulman's 'journey from dependency to alienation to reconciliation' with her aging and ailing parents encompassed a sixty year span of memories. She recalls the ways, both subtle and obvious, in which she rebelled and worked at keeping her distance.

When I met Alix at Sagaris Institute in the mid-seventies she was past her dependency stage. She seemed so untroubled, so successful, so confident--already she was an established author. Until I read this memoir I had no idea that she might have been experiencing inner turmoil.

Here she writes of the reconciliation journey and of discovering the "unexpected, complicated joys of going home." In the process, she realizes that she is and has been "a good enough daughter."

Melissa

Everything I Need "Everything I Need" by Melissa Ferrick, ($17.98, cd, $9.95 cs) Need some new music? Here it is. With her powerful voice and poetic lyrics this album is a necessity in any guitar lover's collection. Also available is her live album with tracks from her earlier releases "Melissa Ferrick +1"; it's almost better than the real thing! DANCE!

Barb
"The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight; Waking Up to Personal and Global Transformation" by Thom Hartman, ($12.95, paperback)

A "must read" for anyone who cares about children, the planet, or their own life--in short, everyone.

According to author Thom Hartmann, the earth's oil reserves will be exhausted in the next 30 to 45 years. If we don't wake up and start planning for a sustainable future, humanity and all of life on earth may not have a future. He proposes solutions based on ancient beliefs and knowledge, and suggests steps individuals can take now to affect the changes in consciousness that will be needed.

In effect, we must move from a power-based patriarchal consciousness to a cooperation-based feminist one.
