Fleshquake - "Corpus Christi" is a first-person perspective computer game set in Corpus Christi College, Oxford University, circa 1720. The player is presented with the puzzle of "Where is everybody?" and must collect clues and a couple of items to attempt to solve the puzzle. The storyline is somewhat sparse, but is meant to be part of a much larger and more complex narrative, beyond the scope of this project. The inspiration for Fleshquake comes from an actual entry in the journal of Oxford scholar and antiquarian, Thomas Hearne: Jan. 12 (Th.). Some Years before I came to Oxford, there was at Oxford, & many other Places of England, a Man that would eat all manner of Flesh, even the worst Carrion, and never be satisfy'd. Some of Oxford have told me they have seen him take stinking Carrion from Dunghills & devour it. Nor would he matter whether it was raw or not. They say that they never heard any other account of his coming to this strange, unnatural habit (for it was not natural) than that he once attempted to fast like our Saviour all the 40 Days of Lent, wthout eating any thing, but that being not able to do it, he was taken with this unnatural way of Eating. In the world of Fleshquake, the Flesheater of Oxford is more than just a legend - he has been transformed into a diabolical villain, a murderer, and even a cannibal. His victims, coupled with evil magic, provide the raw materials for his animated henchmen, the Strawmen: a combination of wood, stone, steel blades, and human body parts. One of these Strawmen appears in the "Corpus Christi" episode, and must be defeated to win the game. |
