Welcome to my resource web page for the IB Math Methods and AP Calculus (AB) students at the High School of Commerce, Springfield, MA, USA. Here you will find some review / supplemental material that I have created, links to sites where students can download graphing software for their home computers, and a collection of (hopefully) useful links to calculus resources on the web.
I hope these resources will add to your understanding of the calculus. Reaching this advanced level in your high school mathematics studies is an achievement that should fill you with pride. The calculus is one of the great achievements in human science and art (yes ... art ... there is great art in mathematics). Succeeding in a course such as this will take commitment and hard work. There is much that must be memorized and while you will probably find many of the basic concepts to be astonishingly simple, the symbol manipulation will test your algebra skills to the maximum. Key to success will be your level of dedication, including the willingness to make mistakes and to learn from those errors, and staying with the material even when things seem to not work out.
"The Rule of Four" is a common saying among math teachers. Students are expected to understand concepts and be able to communicate their findings in four manners of representation:
- Numeric (via tables of values)
- Analytic (usually thought of as "algebraic")
- Graphical
- Verbal
Thus, much of the material accessible via this page and the links that follow will address any or all of those avenues of understanding.
