On a regular basis students will be assigned the task of preparing journal entries. These writing assignments will come from one of four categories:
Astronomy Picture of the Day Math in the News Mathematician
of the WeekMath Quote
of the WeekScience
@NASAThe students will be directed to the appropriate web sites pertaining to these topics on my web pages. Instructions on those pages should provide guidance in completing this journal activity.

Any papers that do not adhere to these minimum requirements will be returned un-graded. References:
All sources must be properly documented. If an article is used from a newspaper or magazine, the citation must include the following:
- Author of the article (person or syndicated source such as the Associated Press)
- Name of the newspaper/magazine
- Date of publication
- Page numbers
If the source is from any other printed source material (encyclopedia, other reference materials, etc) such materials need to be referenced in the proper manner. Please consult a style manual for such references. An online "Bibliography Guide" that I have found to be useful is maintained by the Dept. of Computer Science at the Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Their Bibliography Guide is located at:
http://www.cs.unc.edu/Info/PubsOffice/Bibliography.html
Internet Resources:
If the source is off the Internet, you must cite the URL address (such as my index page at http://users.rcn.com/mwhitney.massed). If an author can be determined, please include that. Look also for a reference to the organization that is sponsoring the site, such as NASA, Discover Magazine, the Library of Congress, or other such organizations.
If in doubt as to the proper form of the citing of your resources, please consult me (or your other teachers - particularly your English teacher) for further suggestions.

offers advice on how to cite Internet resources.Grading:
Journal activities will be graded based on the quality of the written presentation. Factors working in your favor will be originality, clarity, connection to mathematics topics, and general style. Presentations that lack any/all of these characteristics will receive lower grades. Things to particularly avoid are plagiarism (simply copying an entire article or portion of a web site and calling it your own work will receive no credit). Late papers will have a full letter grade deducted for each day late (with a zero issued once the due date week has expired). In the event of student absences, these must be accompanied by a properly documented excuse to forgive the lateness of the assignment. If you are anticipating being absent, you are encouraged to submit your journal early. If you are unsatisfied with your grade (please consult with me on the reasons for the grade) you are encouraged to submit a follow-up journal submission. If this rewritten paper shows improvement, it will be counted as the grade for that assignment in place of the original attempt.
