Xray

I know things about other planets, about countries
I've never been to, and people I haven't seen
in years. But I have no idea what's happening
inside my own body, just a few inches
from my eyes and ears.

Sometimes
a gurgle, cramp,
or twitch reminds me of
the work going on:
digestion,
respiration,
circulation.

 But I can
  only guess
   at what's
    happening
   there.

Xrays,
cat scans,
MRI, sonograms,
and the ever popular
colonoscopy.

So
much
of medical
technology
is designed
to see inside,
even to the point
of sliding tubes
with tiny lenses
inside veins
to see
without
killing.
