2005 Pan-Mass Challenge Photos

Here (for the first time ever) are some photos I took during the Pan-Mass Challenge! Just before the 2005 ride, I bought a new cell phone, and took the opportunity to exercise the camera feature. (I blame the blurriness on them being the first pictures taken with the camera.)

As always, click for bigness.

6am Sat Aug 8 2005
Ten minutes into the ride I caught up with Quad Cycles friends Stephanie, Steve, Charlie, Julie (Charlie’s SO, seen here), and Caitlin. The latter two almost immediately dropped back and were never seen again. (Sorry about the blur here; it happens.)

Charlie was easy to spot, between his conspicuous Union Jack jersey, the Kermit stuck atop his head, and his maniacal screams. I’d tried to sneak up on him, but Caitlin spotted me before I could get close enough to surprise him.

Stephanie is another very strong Quad Cycles rider, and she’s always ready to flash you that slightly blurry smile as she goes by…
  9am Sat Aug 8 2005
Charlie and I skipped the first water stop, but stopped at the next one in Franklin, where we met up with QC jersey-wearing Jeff, who rode with us to the lunch stop in Dighton.
10am Sat Aug 8 2005
Here’s an action shot of Charlie and Jeff as they ride along through North Attleboro, near the Rhode Island border. I think you can see that Charlie is getting a bit concerned about his legs about now.
  11am Sat Aug 8 2005
At the lunch stop in Dighton, I lost Charlie and Jeff, but met up briefly with another QC regular, Tony the Teacher, who was riding in his fourth Pan-Mass Challenge.
2pm Sat Aug 8 2005
Walking around Mass Maritime, I came across another QC rider, Ed, who had just arrived in Bourne after starting his PMC ride at the alternate start in Wellesley.
  4pm Sat Aug 8 2005
Remember Julie and Caitlin? Here’s Charlie waiting for them to arrive at Mass Maritime in Bourne. They’d eventually arrive at the first day’s finish around 6pm.
4pm Sat Aug 8 2005
While we waited for Julie and Caitlin, I showed Charlie my new phone and he took this photo of me. Thankfully, I’d showered by then and didn’t have the usual case of helmet-head!
  5pm Sat Aug 8 2005
Charlie and I had lost our friend Steve early in the ride, but he popped up at Mass Maritime just in time to take the massage appointment that Charlie had made for Julie.
5pm Sat Aug 8 2005
The QC club met up at the beer tent at 5pm. Here are QC stalwarts Maria and Elena enjoying the classically divine lighting of Cape Cod after a long, hard ride.
  5pm Sat Aug 8 2005
Hey, Joe. He seems unable to decide between talking to the girls, the clam chowder, and the beer. Decisions, decisions!
5pm Sat Aug 8 2005
Since he organized the 5pm meeting, Tony was the haloed beacon whom we all gathered around. Well, him and the beer tent, of course.
  1pm Sun Aug 9 2005
Since several of the QC folk biked back to Wellesley, the only person I met on the way to Provincetown on Sunday was Caitlin, whom I ran into after she’d arrived safely, strongly, and successfully at the “family finish”.
