Orny's Scrapbook

I'll worry about designing this page later. For now, here's the raw data, most recent at the top.

This page contains recent photographs taken with my digital camera, an Olympus C2000 Zoom, purchased 6/1999.

Ten days after we got 12" out of the 2/7 storm (below), on 2/17/03 we got 27.5" out of another blizzard, which is more snow than has ever been recorded in Boston, including the Blizzard of '78! The next four photographs are from that storm. Here the steps in front of the Boston Public Library have gone missing beneath all that snow, which reaches up to the foot of one of the statues.

This is a view looking east down the south side of Commonweath Ave. Note the depth of snow on the closest stoop, and compared to the railing of the first yard. You can just barely see a speck of black where an unfortunate bicycle is chained to the fence on the far side of that yard.

Here a man has almost dug his way to his car in one of the alleys in the Back Bay. Yes, those white blobs are cars...

On Feb 7 2003, the 25th anniversary of the Blizzard of '78, a storm dumped more than a foot of snow on downtown Boston. The following three pictures were taken during the height of the storm. Here William Lloyd Garrison models a new suit and toupée...

The most amazing lineup of ska originators ever to hit Boston featured Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan, Patsy Todd, Monty Morris, and Lloyd Knibb -- all backed up by their local legacy: the Pressure Cooker, plus Robin from Beat Soup! Here's a superlative shot of the Buster himself.

I couldn't help but take this one. The bald eagle, the symbol of America, standing up to his knees in water. I swear this guy looked disgusted, as if to say "Who the hell put me here? This sucks, but I'm gonna sit here until someone does something about this!"

One of the few photos in the Scrapbook that I didn't take myself, this is me wading out into Loch Ness, in search of Nessie (or at least a souvenir).

This house sits at the foot of the Pap of Glencoe. I thought it picturesque.

The village of Glencoe sits at the feet of the Three Sisters. It's absolutely breathtaking country.

At noon on New Years Eve, one of the biggest water mains in the city of Boston burst. Thigh-deep water covered a 20-foot diameter crater right in front of Park Street Chuch, at a major intersection and directly above the city's central subway transfer station. Seen from the Park Street Church steps, you get an idea of the size of the crater. This view looks down Tremont Street, where thigh-deep water had surged downhill along the Boston Common and directly into the Park Street subway station, which can be seen on the far side of Park Street.

Coming out of the new Central Artery Tunnel northbound, drivers will go over the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, with its two Y-shaped towers and cable stays. This and the following picture were taken during a small guided tour of the bridge and tunnel.

Nice shot of the conversation pit and my new couch on the day it arrived.. The seating is low to encourage people to look at the skyline, rather than the parking lot just outside the window.

Autumn at World's End, a 244-acre peninsula in Boston Harbor made up of two glacial drumlins. This shot was taken looking from the edge of one drumlin toward the other across an inlet. The Boston skyline can be seen on the horizon at left.

This photo shows Orny and his rented bike outside Barbados' Gun Hill tower, his furthest point from the hotel during his trip to the island. This was about 15 miles inland, and at the summit of an annoyingly steep and lengthy hill.

This photo is taken on the long pier in Oistens, Barbados, on Orny's first full day on the island. Having just picked up a rental bike, I'm off to explore the South Point and its lighthouse. Note the handy-dandy GPS I attached to the handlebars.

This intriguiging photo was taken at Pittsburgh's Andy Warhol Museum. The pillow room is filled with Mylar pillows with approximately the same bouancy as the air around them, giving one the feeling of being inside a bottle of Orbitz! Here I use the reflective surface of the pillow to take a picture of myself taking a picture of my lovely assistant, Inna. Note her reflection in the second pillow, which appears reflected on the first pillow's surface!

This picture was taken during my trip to Pittsburgh. This is the study hall of Pitt's "Cathedral of Learning". This shot was taken in a dark area with no flash or tripod. The results are great, although the colors are a little bolder than they appeared in person.

I took this picture of two ducks that passed our dock one foggy morning. Even saved with minimal compression, you still can see color banding in the sky, illustrating the weakness of JPEG compression.

While sitting on a dock in the Charles, this vicious-looking cormorant walked right up to me, getting too close for *my* comfort! Fortunately, after asking if I had any spare change, he dove back into the river!

First in a series of photos taken at Boston's Fourth of July fireworks, as seen from Sapient's Cambridge office. This shot shows a variety of firework types, achieving a kind of collage effect. These shots all use exposures of 1 to 4 seconds' duration at ISO 100. Settings: F11, 2 sec, ISO 100.

Orny demonstrates that the camera's remote control works even in very bright sunlight. Note the color banding in the sky. This image was taken on a team expedition to the Boston Harbor Islands.
