Comments for: Joseph Schlegel (Josef, Colonist)
Acquired plot G 18/7 in Aug. 31, 1766, moving from
Julianenebene G 14/16.
Letter of Sept 8, 1991 from Werner Tams:
230 years ago the Danish King Friederick the V opened up
new territory in the Schleswig part [of Schleswig-
Holstein]. He had advertised far south in Germany and in
the Reinland and Hessen area. He set aside free land. The
people came [including] our ancestor Josef Schlegel with his
wife.
They first settled in Fockbek, near Rendsburg; then came
to Neuborm. Came from Muschel Back, Baden-Baden, near
Carlsruhe, the trip taking five weeks with oxenwagons, pots,
tools, and plows.
They spoke Schaebish ["Schwabish", i.e., dialect of
Schwaben region], a dialect of southern Germany completely
different from Plattdeutsch (Low-land German). The
newcomers had to learn Low German, the language of that
region.
"But we are all Bormer" -- "Schlegels" would be Colonists of
the Mierhof (pp. no. 3, 4)
Letter of Renate Marquardt (22 JUL 2002):
Joseph Schlegel was a tailor. He came to Rendsburg on 8
AUG 1761, then to Gottorf 20 MAY 1763 as a reserve colonist.
He got his first place on 6 SEPT 1763 in Julianenebene G
14/16 up to 14 AUG 1765. Then he went "out of land" because
he was afraid [he could] not earn his bread. [He] probably
[went] to Dithmarschen (not far away), because there farm
laborers were [sought(?)]. He came back and got G 18/7 in
Neuboerm on 31 AUG 1766. .... Most of the colonists -- 108
-- came from Durlach.
Comments for: Maria Eva Scholl Schlegel
Margaretha Schlegel Gasman may be only a stepdaughter
("stieftochter").
Apparently moved to live with Margaretha in Fr. Wiese when
husband Joseph Schlegel died. She later died there.
