Schleswig-Holstein was part of Denmark until 1864 when the Danes were driven out and they ceded it to Austria-Prussia in the Peace of Vienna, October 30, 1864. Werner Tams letter of Sept. 8, 1991: Your grandfather [Johannes Niemann] was born under Denmark's rule. But [there] was a war ... between Denmark-Prussia and Austria and that Danish-Prussian war ended the 18th of July, 1864. From: Nieman Family History (1950) First pastorate in Danbury Conn. Dad [Johannes] returned after the year and had a pastorate in Germania, Pa. (Allegheny Mountains). From there we moved to New Hamburg, Ont., Canada [near Kitchener, Ont.], remained 3 years -- Dad Pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Mother's sister -- Mrs. William Merlau lived on a farm at Wellesley, Ont. about 15 mi. from New Hamburg. Two children. Katie Merlau, William Merlau -- Katie died. William living on home place. War came in 1914 (in Canada). Dad went ino the Bapt. Church at New Hamburg about 1913. Supplied in Elgin, Ia. Had first Bapt. pastorate in Kyle, Texas; moved to Texas in 1914. Moved to Austin 1915.
