Simple Quilts: Recycled Comfort for Those in Need
OPRAH!! OPRAH!! OPRAH!!
Hello, Oprah! Hello, Harpo Studios!! We hope you were impressed by our "Simple Quilts". They are our works of HEART created from 100% recycled materials crafted 100% by volunteers. Check out these photos from last October 28th, Make a Difference Day 2008. We completed 153 quilts that day in 12 hours, and sent 145 of them to poor children of Appalachia.
We hope you see the vast potential for good in this! We would love to share what we've learned with others across this good country of ours. The need is great, and growing each day. We can't fix it, but we can offer something for each person to -- literally -- hold on to, and carry with them, and find comfort in. A little bit of hope can go a long way.
How about visiting one of our events? How about holding one somewhere in your studios? You and your staff (and family a*nd friends) could see just how easy and fun it all is! And... you all would be able to recycle some of that extra bedding and fabric that sits around unused! With a better understanding of the process, we could work together to invite others across the country to host their own events!!
We're working on lists of supplies needed (though we always hope they are given from what folks already have) & other supportive information. So keep checking back...
THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!
PS from Founder Marjorie Paul This is NOT my idea, this is NOT about me. I believe that it's origin is in Spirit. It's a simple, universal idea that has been excellently received (which confirms to me that it is Spirit based). I am following it's lead, as I feel "called" to do.
Current Total: 492 Simple Quilts (since October 2007)
Where have they gone? Photos from Appalachia
Our Mission:
To create SIMPLE QUILTS* from recycled bedding, draperies, and fabric and give them freely to people in need locally, nationally, and internationally. Simple Quilts are assembled in a way that encourages ALL community members to participate. Scraps are recycled into animal beds and distributed to local animal shelters.
*What is a "Simple Quilt"?
A simple quilt is NOT a fancy bed covering. A simple quilt IS sturdy and warm, measures about 60" by 80" (the size of a flat twin bed sheet), and is constructed from recycled bedding, draperies, or unused fabric. It brings warmth on a cold night or shelter from the sun on a hot day. For the poorest of the poor it may serve as a bed, a room divider, a backpack for refugees, even a home. It is a work of HEART that carries with it a message of hope to those who may have lost theirs. We believe that our simple quilts, constructed with love, can and DO make a difference in the lives they touch.

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO DONATE?
Check out out list of materials we accept. Contact co-coordinator Belinda Lauro with questions or to arrange pick up or drop off. Special thanks to: Comfort Inn, Lafayette Inn, Hampton Inn, and The Marriott.
Interested in hosting an event?
Here are some basic considerations to think about, and some information about how a "non-prepped" event might be structured. Any prep work that can be done ahead of the event will increase the number of simple quilts. Here are some simple instructions for creating simple quilts. We also have very detailed instructions for Pinners, Stitchers, Flippers, Ziggers, and Knotters.
