Zen is the direct transmission of truth from mind to mind without the mediation of words or intellect. When beginning the practice of Zen, however, we depend on our words and intellect for our knowledge and motivation. So Zen teachers through the ages have spoken and written about Zen, "using fire to fight fire".

The Gateless Gate

The great thirteenth century Zen teacher Mumon wrote the following: "Zen has no gates. The purpose of the Buddha's words is to enlighten others. Therefore, Zen should be gateless. Now, how does one pass through this gateless gate? ... If a reader is brave enough and goes straight forward in meditation, no delusions can disturb him. He will become enlightened just as the masters in India and China."
