Dear Jonathan,
We have received the materials you forwarded. I note that they do not
contain a number of the most relevant articles by and about Mr. Hitchens
relating to his position on the Holocaust, including ones in The Nation,
Vanity Fair and The Flat Hat, a William and Mary student
newspaper. Your submission also makes no reference to widely reported
statements allegedly made by Mr. Hitchens to Edward J. Epstein relating
to the Holocaust.
You did furnish to us, however, a book review by Mr. Hitchens published on
May 20, 2001. The review, previously unseen by Dr. Kissinger, relates to
the libel action brought by David Irving and concludes that "It's not
too much to say that, by the end of the trial, the core evidence for the
Holocaust had been tested and found to be solid." Based on that statement,
Dr. Kissinger is prepared to accept that, whatever else Mr. Hitchens wrote
or said about the Holocaust prior to his review, he does not now challenge
its reality.
Sincerely yours,
Stuart W. Gold
