This section of the site is dedicated to the geneology of my maternal
grandmother Mary Elizabeth Hopper. "Betty" to her friends for most of her life, "Nanny" to her
grandchildren.
Nan was my only grandparent I knew as an adult. I never recall
seeing her angry and she had a sparkle in her eye to the end.
In my childhood she taught me magic tricks and did jigsaw puzzles
with me and we'd read "Ferdinand the Bull" to each other.
She was a Philadelphia "Lady" and always wanted everything and
everybody to be "nice".
For a class project in sixth grade I interviewed her and learned
about all her "beaux" and about the dates they would have to Penn
football games to watch the Quakers play; more important to her
than the football though was the big yellow-Chrisanthemum her
beau would give as a corsage before the game. I gather she
was something of a flapper. "Boy, we had fun" she would say.
I haven't done much research on her roots, ironic as she herself
was the family geneologist. Other than my immediate family I
know of no living relatives of hers. If you are one please get
in touch.
