This section of the site is dedicated to the geneology of my paternal
grandfather Sheldon Nichols Ripley.
Sheldon died 30 years before I was born and I know very little
about him aside from a few pictures and impressions from my father.
From a geneological point of view I have been very fortunate because
Sheldon lived in a town that cared deeply about its heritage.
The town of Cohasset and its neighbor Hingham have published
very complete town histories with very detailed geneologies of
townspeople.
This effort would be enormously more difficult today because of
the mobile society in which we live. Aside from an immegration
across the ocean from Old Hingham to New Hingham, Sheldon's ancestors
stayed put; his descendants have not. His grandchildren are spread
to the four corners: New York, Minnesota, Hawaii, Colorado, California,
and London.
