Amateur Radio is one of the most fun hobbies in which you can participate. All you need is an FCC license, which can be obtained with a little self study, or an entrance level class, such as the ones that our club offers. Pat and I are both licensed. She holds a Tech class (KB3IDQ)and is currently studying her code to upgrade to a General Class. I hold an Extra Class (KR3U), which at the time I took it, required 20 WPM of Morse Code. Learning Morse Code was at one time a deterrant to getting licensed, but now, you can get a Tech license that does not need any code to obtain. Other classes of licenses require a maximum of 5 WPM of code. The higher the class license you have, the more operating and frequency privledges you get in return. Below are some links to equipment manufacturers, club sites, and places to get more information regarding this very enjoyable hobby.
