Classic & City Meet Information

At the end of the Naperville Swim Conference summer season,
there are two major championship meets.
These are called "Classic" and "City".

Each swimmer is invited to attend one of the Championship Meets at the end of the season. However, swimmers must qualify to attend the "City" meet.  City qualifying times can be found in your Steeple Run Stingrays Swim Team handbook, which you received at the beginning of the season, or click here to go to the webpage. Also - all 15-18 swimmers only swim at City.

Any 14 & under swimmer that does not make qualifying "City" times, will be entered into the "Classic" meet.
Also, all 6 & under swimmers only attend the Classic meet.

Normally, for Classic, we use the 3 area high school pools; NCHS, WVHS, NVHS.  However, recently, they have undergone summer construction work, and we can only swim at 2 out of 3 pools.  Therefore, the Classic will be held at the 2 remaining pools, but instead of having 8 teams each
(normally 8 teams x 3 locations = 24 total teams)
we would have a "morning" and a "late afternoon" Classic session
but with only 6 teams (6 teams x 2 locations x 2 sessions = 24 total teams)
So - it will be a long day for some -
Also - if a swimmer has no previous seed time - swimmer is not allowed to swim Classic.

These meets are big time swimming events, with touch pad timing, readout boards, and computer printouts. This gives all the swimmers a taste of the real thing, competing in an 8-lane indoor high school pool.

Each team is assigned a "gathering area" in the gym. Posters, signs, & banners created by the swim teams, are taped up on the wall, and blankets & chairs spread out.

Since there are so many swimmers, they are pre-staged in several areas. There is "first call", then "second call", and then "final call". The swimmers are then lined up, sitting on bleacher benches, and then walked into the pool. Once in the pool, they sit - in order - on folding chairs... and move around the perimeter of the pool until they finally arrive at the starting blocks.

To make these massive meets work smoothly, all teams must contribute several volunteer workers at either of these meets. A Steeple Run Classic/City volunteer signup sheet is usually posted on the bulletin board. It should be noted, that you may volunteer for either championship meet, even if you don't have a swimmer in that particular meet. Also, since the meets are quite long running, the volunteers may signup for a certain amount of time - called sessions.

The Classic Meet is spread out using multiple indoor pools.
Each local high school pool usually has between 7 or 8 teams competing.
The City Meet is usually held between all 23 teams at one of the larger local high school pools.

Prior to each championship meet, we have a Pasta party at our clubhouse.
We create team posters to tape on the gym walls where we are gathered during the Classic/City meets.

The Classic/City results, along with any ribbons or medals, are usually handed out during our team banquet. Ribbons are only awarded to the very top 8 of each event, no matter how many heats are listed.

The medals are only awarded to the top 3 of each event.

The large round medal was presented to all our swimmers as a keepsake from the team.

Good luck to all swimmers.
