The town of Lexington, 12 miles west of Boston, has been called the ‘Birthplace of American Liberty.’  The Battle of Lexington took place on April 19, 1775, and marked the first military clash in the American Revolution.

Each April, the battle is reenacted shortly after Paul Revere and William Dawes gallop through the streets spreading the alarm, “The Regulars are coming! The Regulars are coming!”  It was here on Lexington Common that Captain Parker told his 77 Minute Men as they faced 700 of General Gage’s British troops, “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon; but, if they mean to have a war, let it begin here!”  Members of the Lexington Chapter in colonial dress meet in front of Buckman Tavern to join members of the Lexington Minute Men in memorial services and to place a wreath at the obelisk across the Green honoring the eight Patriots who fell in the battle.

Lexington Chapter DAR

In 1910 the Lexington DAR dedicated a plaque on the site of the old belfrey from which the alarm was rung on April 19th, 1775. In 1999, we had this plaque refurbished. To celebrate the Bicentennial of the Battle of Lexington, we planted a sugar maple on the grounds of the Buckman Tavern. It was in this tavern that the Training Band awaited the arrival of the British in 1775. Our tree was named after the original Liberty Tree in Boston under whose branches the Sons of Liberty planned their opposition to the diabolical Stamp Act.

In keeping with our three-fold purpose of Patriotism, History and Education our ongoing projects include sponsoring a Good Citizen Award in nine local high schools; recognizing outstanding community  service; recognizing an outstanding teacher of American History; sponsoring an American History essay contest for 5th to 8th graders; supporting the Hillside School in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and five other DAR schools; remembering patients at the Edith Nurse Rogers Veterans Hospital at Christmas and  maintaining one of Lexington’s traffic islands.

We sponsor the Jason Russell Society Children of the American Revolution, in Framingham, Massachusetts. The children join us in the Patriots Day festivities and march in the Patriots Day parade.
