The town of Lexington, 12 miles west of
Boston, has been called the ‘Birthplace of American Liberty.’ The Battle of Lexington took place on April
19, 1775, and marked the first military clash in the American Revolution.
Each April, the battle is reenacted shortly
after Paul Revere and William Dawes gallop through the streets spreading the
alarm, “The Regulars are coming! The Regulars are coming!” It was here on Lexington Common that Captain
Parker told his 77 Minute Men as they faced 700 of General Gage’s British
troops, “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon; but, if they mean to
have a war, let it begin here!” Members
of the Lexington Chapter in colonial dress meet in front of Buckman
Tavern to join members of the Lexington Minute Men in memorial services and to
place a wreath at the obelisk across the Green honoring the eight Patriots who
fell in the battle.
