We are also developing software for modeling
semiconductor quantum wires (2D confinement of
carriers), and quantum dots (3D confinement). Our
feasibility studies performed under an SBIR Phase
I grant demonstrated that we can compute the
optical properties of quantum wires and dots
efficiently. We are directing efforts towards
simulating the transport of carriers through such
devices. A complete software package is expected
to dramatically speed up the development of 2D and
3D confinement lasers and provide an environment
for the simulation of carrier transport in active
quantum wire and quantum dot transistors. Other
important benefits of such software include the
ability to explore novel electronic mechanisms for
application to the next generation of quantum
devices.
