October 27, 1999 Community Workshop

On October 29, 1999 over 60 participated in a televised workshop for the Davis Conservation District Design Guidelines effort. The workshop objectives included:

  • Review the planning process
  • Identify character districts
  • Discuss design issues

The workshop agenda included an introduction to the planning process; a presentation by consultants Bruce Race and Nore' Winter regarding planning history, issues and case studies from other communities; and participants working in teams to identify areas of special character in 1917 Davis. Workshop participants explored design issues by completing the following exercises:

Exercise #1: City of Davis 1917 Context

From memory, create a drawing of Davis. Indicate the historic part of the community, principal neighborhoods, major community gateways, edges and landmarks.

Exercise #2: Character Area Mapping

Using the large map, indicate to boundaries of areas that have distinctive characteristics. This could include land uses, types of buildings, architectural character, landscape, or other distinctive features.

Exercise #3: Distinctive Characteristics

From the photographs of streets and buildings, select ones that reflect the distinctive features in your character areas. Cut them out and glue them to the map. Add notes to the photos and maps that summarize your observations about the character features.
