Sylvan Oaks
Date: February 29, 2000
On February 29 over 20 people participated in a community workshop
at the Sylvan Oaks branch library to have input into the library master
planning process. There were participants from five branches. They worked
as members of four planning teams. The teams mapped their communities and
the role of their libraries, imagined the type of services and place the
library would be in 20 years, identified their immediate needs, and potential
community partners.

Workshop Summary
The participants considered their branch libraries part of changing
communities and that they needed to work with businesses, schools and seniors
in the future. The need for increased circulation and access to technology
was stressed. Branches' role as community and cultural centers was another
important feature for libraries of the future. The first step towards accomplishing
their needs is to focus on outreach and fundraising. Immediate needs included
added hours and physical improvements to the libraries such as bathrooms
and meeting spaces. Their partnerships for their libraries included schools,
cities, chamber of commerce, and other high-tech industries.
