June 17, 1999 Community Workshop

 

On June 17, 1999 the Planning Commission hosted the first of four community workshops scheduled to update the Union City General Plan. The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to help catalog the best places and assets for youth, families and seniors in Union City; discuss their pressing needs; and potential partnerships.

Workshop Objectives:

• Review the overall approach to forming a Youth, Family, Seniors and Health strategy
• Discuss the special future needs for youth and families
• Map Union City's assets and potential partners

Summary and Next Steps

 

Planning Teams:

Participants worked as members of six planning teams to map and list assets, needs, existing programs, and potential partners. Teams then presented the highlights of their efforts to the entire group. Three overall themes emerged.

Team 5 presented their observations and recommendations using the headline of "Spiritual, Mind and Body". These categories were echoed by other teams.

Theme One: Spiritual

It is important to instill values in young people through mentoring and volunteerism.

Theme Two: Mind

Essential partners include educational, religious and business organizations to build the capacity of young people and families to improve their quality of life.

Theme Three: Body

Affordable health care and housing are important to all of Union City's residents.

A fourth theme emerged as well. The workshop participants acknowledged the linkage between the needs of youth, families and seniors; economic and fiscal health and the capacity to be a compassionate community; and partners' contributions to a healthy future for young people, families and seniors.

The solutions to meeting the needs of youth, families and seniors are interconnected.
