Mulberry Street Association's Quandary
The time January 2002, MSA has settled and most of our membership has received equitable
settlements allowing them to comply with this Mitigation.
Yet there depicted above in the Phase 2 photo is Ms. Ozalee Jackson's residence. Ms. Jackson
of course was not truthful with MSA from the very start. It was brought to MSA's attention
as the mitigation was drawing towards closure. When Ms. Jackson's home hit the City Council
docket without Ms. Jackson's knowledge.
MSA's response was swift action by having Ms. Jackson's home removed from the docket. This
was done by illustrating the possibility of predatory lending practices
which resulted in allowing Ms. Jackson time to address these issues.
Ms. Jackson is not alone, MSA leadership has made recent walk through's of the mitigation. And
what we found was nightmarish conditions that Ms. Jackson endures until her matter is brought before
a court of law to determine. Upon speaking with Ms. Jackson's son we learned their home has been
vandalized and robbed numerous times.
A few houses away from Ms. Jackson the smell of fuel oil is present from vacant City owned properties
whose home fuel oil tanks most likely had been compromised for the cooper tubing for salvage. We also
learned many of the recently vacated homes which are now City owned properties their basements flooded
from having the cooper water pipes being ripped out for salvage by squatter's. And more than likely they
endure the drug addicts, prostitute's and drunks using these City owned properties for places to conduct
their illegal activities.
MSA does not condone these acts neither does MSA have any influence to ease Ms. Jackson's plight. We urge
all parties involved to seek a speedy resolution to Ms. Jackson's plight. Perhaps expediting the bonding
process that is currently holding up demolition of Phase 1. With fewer places to conduct illegal activities
perhaps Ms. Jackson could rest a bit easier. MSA has exhausted all its resources in trying to aid Ms. Jackson.
