March 14,2002 one by one they came. Once assembled the demolition of Mulberry Street began. Since Hurricane Floyd of September of 1999 the onwer/occupants lived with the fact that the Assumpink Creek would flood their homes. Except in 1999 a Federal Mitigation was underway and the Hurricane Floyd event expanded the mitigations scope.
Today after nearly 3 years of tough talks between citizens and government the citizens walked away with an equitable buyout. One the owner/occupants fit the definition of mitigation as set forth by the Federal Government, which is "mitigation is not meant to make the owner/occupant whole but allow them an opportunity to recoup "most" but "not all" of their investment in property.
Now the healing and the dangers of the threat of fire, squatters, and a place where illegal activites has taken place is now being laid to rest. Making it a safer place for those who still remain within the area.
