Enigma Variations

Variation 1: CAE, Alice, Elgar's wife

Variation 2: Hew David Stewart-Powell, pianist, chamber music player, friend of Elgar's. This variation is a satire about his diatonic dexterity over the keyboard

Variation 3: Richard Baxter Townshend, eccentric tricycle rider, golfing friend of Elgar's

Variation 4: William Meath Baker, wealthy friend, entertained guests at country estate. This variation refers to a time when he had a party at his estate and ordered horses and carts for transportation. He read the list of guests to the crowd, ran out of the music room and slammed the door.

Variation 5: Richard Arnold, pianist. His conversation which covered serious matters was interrupted by witty remarks.

Variation 6: Isabel Fitton, who introduced Elgar to his wife Alice

Variation 7: Arthur Troyte Griffith, archtitect, artist, sportsman, enjoyed kite flying, hiking with Elgar.

Variation 8: Winifred Norbury, organized Worcester Philharmonic Society

Variation 9: August Johannes Jaeger (Nimrod), influential friend, confidant

Variation 10: Dora Penny (Dorabella), friend of Elgar family

Variation 11: Dr George Sinclair, organist at Hereford Cathedral, with his bulldog, Dan. This variation describes a time when Dr. Sinclair took his dog for a walk along the banks of the River Wye and the dog fell in and frantically paddling against the surging current and eventually reaching safety.

Variation 12: Basil Nevinson, played chamber music with Elgar's group

Variation 13: ??? The title of this variation is *** and may refer to a lady (perhaps Lady Mary Lygon) who went on a sea voyage.

Variation 14: EDU, Edward Elgar himself
