Short Description

Adults reading comics? Who would have thought it? Even the New York Times is now reviewing and publishing work by top graphic novelists. The growing literary graphic novel movement is giving us an unprecedented number of new works of biography, journalism and fiction targeted at serious readers. In this four-week course we will explore seminal graphic novels by Chris Ware, Lynda Barry, Jason, and Dan Clowes, among others. Along the way we will discuss each artist's unique approach to visual storytelling and find out how this unique melding of words and pictures differs from poetry, literature and film. We'll also touch on the history of the medium from newspaper comic strips through comic books to underground comix.

For the first session, please read Jaime Hernandez's book, The Death of Speedy: Volume Seven of the Complete Love and Rockets (also available in the collection Locas: A Love & Rockets Book, pp. 256-376).
