SKYWARN Training Update...
Some advancements have been made on SKYWARN Training for the region.
Here is an update on the latest developments:
Windham County Connecticut:
A site will be booked in this area through Connecticut Emergency
Management.
Worcester County Massachusetts:
Ted Agos will be contacting me and Glenn Field about a site at Holy
Cross University in the late March to Early April timeframe. He also
stated he could draw on much of the Windham County Connecticut area
people from his area as it is very close. This may also help in getting
people in the Woonsocket, RI area trained as well.
Rhode Island:
Fred Lightell and Peter Lamb will be booking a site in the Tiverton, RI
area for the late March to early June timeframe. A site in Western
Rhode Island may also be set-up in the same timeframe and I'll be
attempting to contact Martin Mendelson on this second site.
Fitchburg area:
Talked to Jeanine Swick and she will be attempting to set-up a site
in her area in the coming weeks. Details to follow as she contacts
me.
Southern New Hampshire:
Section Emergency Coordinator Gary O'Kula is contacting his EC's in the
Southern New Hampshire area for assistance in getting the same two sites
that were used for SKYWARN training last year.
Cape Cod and Islands:
Need to contact N1SNH-Henry Brown the Vice President of FARA in an attempt
to set-up a date, ASAP.
Further details to follow, in upcoming editions of this newsletter.
South Coast SKYWARN Net Get Together Nov. 16th at Fairhaven Cable...
On Saturday November 16th from 12:30-2:30 PM, the South Coast SKYWARN
group will have a get together at the Fairhaven Cablevision located
off of Rte 6 in Fairhaven, MA. There will be a brief meeting on concerns
of the spotters with regards to net operations, and to get everyone's
feedback on SKYWARN retraining for next spring. A brief video (lasting
about one hour or less) provided by George in Nantucket of hurricane
Bob and a couple of the strong Nor'easters will be shown as well. This
video was taken right from Nantucket island.
Anyone with weather memorabilia that they would like to bring to the get
together would be great, and would be put on display. We're looking to
have about an hour for the video and a brief formal meeting and the
rest of the time spent with informal chit-chat, refreshments, and a
display of weather memorabilia to be shown for all.
Directions:
To get to the Cablevision from:
Rte 140 South:
Take Exit 2 I 195 East, Cape Cod, and then take the Rte 240 Fairhaven exit.
Go straight through one set of lights take a left at the second set of
lights and continue down Rte 6 East about a 1/2 mile and you'll see CVI
Industries (Fairhaven Cable) on your left.
From I 195:
I 195 to Rte 240 Fairhaven, straight through one set of lights, take
a left at the second set of lights and continue down Rte 6 about a 1/2 mile
and Fairhaven cable will be on your left side.

N1KXJ-Ray Wall now ARES Section Emergency Coordinator...
Congratulations to Ray Wall, N1KXJ, as he is the new Section Emergnecy
Coordinator for Eastern Massachusetts. I had a long two hour phone
conversation with him as he discussed with me his agenda and SKYWARN
is one of his paramount pieces of agenda. There could be some exciting
new developments to further advance SKYWARN in the near future and we'll
be in close contact with him.
Media Winter Weather Media Awareness Workshop Dec. 7th...
There will be a Winter Weather Media Awareness Workshop in Springfield,
MA from 10 AM-1:15 PM. This will discuss various winter weather topics
and may be interesting to attend if you have the time to travel out to
Springfield or live in the local area. More information on directions
etc. as it becomes available.
Snowfall Reports from Spotters Take on Added Importance...
Beginning this year, the FAA will no longer take snowfall measurements
at the various airports for climatological data. This obviously means
a serious degradation of the precision of monthly and yearly snowfall
totals at these locations. The National Weather Service will be looking
for more snowfall reports from all area weather spotters but in particular
those centered near the Worcestor, Boston and Providence airports for
climatology. There is even talk of having more Cooperative weather observers
which would mean "free" sophisticated weather stations for those within
areas that NWS needs reports from, unfortunately, there is no government
funds to support this at least at present.
Needless to say, the need for SKYWARN activations this winter on an hour
by hour basis for heavy snow, as well as, having those spotters that
report in within a couple of miles of local area airports send there
reports into NWS Taunton will be paramount this winter.
That's all for this edition of the SKYWARN Newsletter, plenty more to
follow in next week's newsletter as SKYWARN continues to move in Southern
New England. Comments, suggestions, or topics for this newsletter are
always welcome. The next SKYWARN Newsletter will be issued the weekend
of November 9th and 10th.
Respectfully Submitted,
