Master of Science Degree Programs in Education
Concentration in Music
A student who wishes to obtain the Master of Science Degree with a concentration in Music must fulfill the following requirements for admission into the program:
  1. An earned bachelor’s degree in music education from a properly accredited institution of higher education.
  2. A copy of a valid teaching certificate.
  3. A personal interview by the Music Department.
    The purpose of the program is to further develop the student’s cultural, musical and professional growth.

A minimum of thirty (30) semester hours in graduate study must be completed to the satisfaction of the Music Department and the Director of University Admissions in relation to the designated program in music, including the requirements for the non-thesis or thesis approach. The student’s program should be planned jointly by the student and the Graduate Program Coordinator.

A maximum of six (6) semester hours received from courses bearing a 400 level number may be included for credit in a degree program.

Culmination of the non-thesis approach is MUS 590 Music Department Seminar. A candidate for the M.S. degree with a concentration in music following this approach is required to pass a comprehensive examination that is scheduled by the Music Department during the spring semester.

The thesis approach culminates in MUS 591 Independent Thesis Research in Music, a six semester hour requirement. The thesis will be completed under the guidance of an appropriate member of the Music Department recommended by the Coordinator with the approval of the Chairman of the Music Department and the faculty member concerned.
