1:58 For Friends In Belgium
- recorded live on European tour
- "Vini Reilly looks in a permanent daze, even as you talk to him
directly. As the Durutti Column he enjoys a degree of success, but
all too often his mellow guitar exercises set to tape loops become
overly soporific -- especially in the Melkweg [Milky Way, Amsterdam],
where the smell of marijuana is literally stifling.
"But remembering his past illnesses it's a relief to hear him say 'I'm
well again' (even if the physical evidence doesn't corroborate that),
'So I'm playing as much as I can now.'"

Vini's burnt bacon sandwich. The stains and signatures were clear."

** "`Catos con Guantes' is a Spanish/Mexican phrase I encountered in
L.A. -- means "Cats with Gloves... don't catch mice". I thought
if I was Paco de Lucia I'd think the musician was wearing gloves."
[VR letter to Alan Macdougall, 1989/07]
The full Spanish phrase is "Gato con guantes no caza ratones".
The spelling error has been retained on subsequent reissues for

I like purity and truth, which are much more difficult, somehow...
I write music about things which make me feel things and people make
me feel more things than anything else... I always find it strange
that anybody would listen to my music because my music is very
self-indulgent. I always wondered why people listen to it because
it is just me expressing my feelings"

- "...one can translate 'Fado' as fate or destiny, understood as
something unavoidable. Mix that with the Latin feeling 'Saudade'
(i.e. sort of longing) -- 'Amigos em Portugal' has a track with
that name -- and you'll get a straaaaange mood. It's somehow sad.
That said, the music/singing is typically made with a guitar
quartet/triplet ( 1/2 classic guitars, used as 'bass', and 2
Portuguese guitars -- 12 strings each ! ), and a singer, the more
black he/she is dressed the better, who sings with a lot of
'inflections' in the voice... Amalia Rodrigues is the exponent
of our days, although there are many others."

-'The Durutti Column is a historical group, from Manchester, tied up
with the experience of their guitarist, Vinny Reilly. The band was
founded in the post-punk period and has been able to trace an original
path connected to the lyricism and melancholy of their leader: his
music enjoys a hard and fast coherence where the label "rock" is
undoubtedly limiting. From the first recorded work, "The Return of
The Durutti Column (Factory 1980), the musical path of The Durutti
Column has developed in accordance with a musical stance which has
distanced them more and more from rock music, almost becoming electric
folk. They have had a deep influence on other musicians in the
Manchester music scene. Reilly has collaborated with, among others,
Morrissey (Smiths) and Holly Johnson. In this sense, the connecting
link between the slightly anarchistic, creative style of groups in the
seventies, like Joy Division, A Certain Ratio and the new, more
psychedelic movement of present groups can be glimpsed. MEGAMIX is
influenced by Disco music, as can be assumed from the title, but the
finale is surprising with the prominence of Reilly's guitar.'

- "And now a Vini Reilly track. As God says in the Movie, it's good
music to chill out to. With all the mythologising over the Ian
Curtis suicide, the applause at the way Blue Monday reshaped music
and the delight at the way the Happy Mondays reshaped their central
cortexes, it can be forgotten that Factory Records of Manchester,
England, was begotten to get the music of an anemic-looking
waif-like (genius) guitarist out there on the street. I'm not going
to explain the origin of the Nom de Plume that Vini worked under -
The Durutti Column - buy the fucking book. But I will explain that
the track "Otis" comes from an album called Vini Reilly, the sixth
of ten major albums by our Vin. This is the point in the 80's where
the fiddling with the new computer technologies via a bunch of wires
and a bunch of gaffer tape has progressed to the motherboard and
you can buy all-in-one boxes that do the trick very nicely thank
you. Bit like replacing ten years of meditation with a tab of
acid. We bought Vini some boxes; a sampler and a sequencer to be
exact. And this is the result. The machines work well but it's
still Vini's guitar that haunts." -Anthony Wilson, March 2002

- "A bunch of us went and saw DC's first gig in NYC. I befriended him
him after the show and gave him my records. Later, a friend of mine
visited Manchester in '83, met Tony Wilson, and connected up again
with Vini himself. She passed along my tape containing 'For Vini',
and we got a nice letter from him months later. He was very humbled."
