"Another Setting" Japanese release liner notes

The Durutti Column started in 1978 as an ordinary rock band. There
are a few DC gigs in the Russel Club which Alan Erasmus and Tony
Wilson managed. Later the name of this club changed to "Factory"
(from Andy Warhol's studio). [This is false, according to Wilson's
FAC339 interview.]

In Factory's opening show in May 1978, Joy Division, The Durutti
Column, The Tiller Boys, Cabaret Voltaire, Jilted John, Big In Japan
and Manicured Noise appeared. The club "Factory" closed in October
1978. Alan and Tony began "Factory" as a record label. The first LP
release was "Factory Sample" in December 1978. Joy Division, John
Dowie, Cabaret Voltaire and The Durutti Column contributed.

The "early" Durutti Column broke up. Vini Reilly decided to continue
the DC as a solo project. Vini intended to make the first DC's album
with Gordon Smith (probably the same person as the guitarist in Kevin
Coyne's band). But he changed this plan to making "The Return of the
Durutti Column" with Martin Hannett (rhythm box and synthesizer) which
was released in January 1980. The jacket of the first LP pressing was
made of sandpaper. The aim was scratching other records' artwork.
Vini explained that he made this lp as a protest to a mere shell of
PUNK music.

Q: "Who do you want to play with?"
Vini Reilly: "No one in particular. Some players of classical
music. I want to write music for Cor Anglais, violin and trumpet.
Anybody who can read scores and play skillfully will do."
VR: "I like to produce my music by myself."
