Artful signs Durutti Column
Artful Records have signed Durutti Column for a second album. After the
success of Rebellion Artful Records have picked up their option to release
a second album from Vinnie Reilly. The album is currently being recorded
and will be released in March 2003.
8 JULY 2002
"ROSR" has begun general distribution.
"Time Was Gigantic" and "Sex And Death" have apparently been deleted,
alas, so grab copies if you haven't already.
Concert announcement Thursday August 8th
"special guest Vini is a thoroughly modern and avant-garde guitarist,
playing both electric and flamenco with loops and backing tracks.
A rare solo concert, he will be performing seldom heard compositions
and experimental pieces in his unique style."
7 JUNE 2002
"Return Of The Sporadic Recordings" is shipping from Kooky and it's excellent!
9 MAY 2002
"Return Of The Sporadic Recordings" has been pressed and mail
order copies are planned to ship early June, with general distribution
planned for early July. Contact kookydiscs@btinternet.com
17 APRIL 2002
300 promo copies were made of the single, which was actually
titled "Voluntary Arrangement", but its release has been cancelled.
19 FEBRUARY 2002
The "Fields Of Athenry" CD single is due out from Artful mid-March.
It contains two additional unreleased tracks.
"Return Of The Sporadic Recordings" release is planned for Summer;
it's a two CD set containing most of the original Sporadic Recordings
(the tracks that were already reissued on the London "Vini Reilly"
reissue cannot appear) plus a new disc of outtakes and rarities.
The Jazz Cafe concert was a great success by all accounts.
Also, Kooky has made the first official DC T-shirts!
10 DECEMBER 2001
Concert date scheduled: 18 February 2002 at The Jazz Cafe (London).
"Featuring live instruments rather than
manufactured muzak, Rebellion combines ... and the
discipline of not smoking ganja for three years."
19 NOVEMBER 2001
Artful plan a single for release in February:
Fields Of Athenry b/w two unreleased tracks
(Odd choice of title track, but it was well-received in some quarters.)
Concerts are now planned for March 2002 (at Union Chapel, London, e.g.)
with Pete Shelley & Howard Devoto, DC headlining.
There were two concerts in Portugal during October along with a radio
interview. The poorly-promoted performances were apparently popular
and there even well-wishers at the train station!
It's essentially certain that there won't be a remastered version
of Rebellion.
14 SEPTEMBER 2001
Vini is working on music for a play (title unknown) intended to be
staged in Glasgow next year. A recording is expected to come out of
this.
Concerts are still not pinned down, but may occur in early December in
London and Manchester plus perhaps one other location.
There's anguish over the flawed Rebellion master, but the likelihood
of a repressing doesn't seem high at this point.
Against expectations, Crépuscule has not reissued "Lips That Would
Kiss"; furthermore their excellent Durutti-related "From Brussels With
Love" and "The Fruit Of The Original Sin" compilations are again no
longer available.
JUNE 2001
Rebellion was released by Artful on June 4.
The following item appeared for sale at Sounds Great Music:
Fender Stratocaster, Durruti Column, Vinny Reilly guitar,
guitar was used on all albums, includes signed provinance. £2500
21 DECEMBER 2000
The next album is to be released on Artful Records, provisionally
titled "Rebellion" and planned for April 2001 release.
Bruce Mitchell and Keir Stewart are the main participants,
though others may well become involved in the final stages.
UK gigs are likely for Brighton, Manchester, and London,
and possibly another UK site. No mention of anything overseas.
"Dream Of A Child" was used extensively in a recent Channel 4
documentary on the life of UK television presenter Paula Yates.
28 MARCH 2000
THE DURUTTI COLUMN: New album in August + Film and TV work
Vini Reilly is back in the studio working on new material intended for
an as yet untitled new album which is tentatively scheduled for
release in August 2000 via independent UK imprint, Artful, noted for
its excellent recent releases by fellow-Mancunians, The Fall. Work
commenced yesterday (March 27th) and the cut is booked for June 1st.
Kier engineers and/or produces and Bruce drums: final line-up may
yet include John Metcalfe along with others (tba).
In the meantime, "Miss Haymes" (from classic DC album, "The Guitar and
Other Machines") can be heard over the credits to the Channel 4
documentary "Love and Money" (broadcast for the next three weeks) and
the timeless "Sketch For Summer" is destined to feature largely in a
new Film On Four movie currently in production up in sunny Newcastle.
More info to follow.

Mailing list administration is automated.
Some quick rules of the road: the durutti-list is billed as a
"Low-volume interest list for material about Vini Reilly's group."
Please use the related durutti-ot list for subjects that stray from
from the main Durutti Column topic.
The list can be posted to only by subscribers. This is one of
several strategies used to minimize undesirable content, but it also
means that you must post from the exact email address you subscribe with.
For the sake of privacy (especially email addresses), please do not store
mail sent to the list in any publicly-accessible manner.
Info resources: discography and various texts, images, and audio are
available at URL http://www.ultranet.com/~rps/durutti-column/
There's over 250 members of the list in at least 20 countries but
traffic is low-volume and sporadic, so don't be surprised if you
don't hear anything for a while. Past topics of interest have been
a discussion of Portuguese "Fado" singing, the first group Vini was in,
The Nosebleeds, and an explication of VR's guitar techniques.
