Home court – easy. Away match - bring it on! Either way, it makes no difference to NCC’s tennis team. These athletes went undefeated this spring and brought home an Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (EPCC) Championship for the second year in a row. Both the women's and the men's doubles teams finished as state champions at the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club on Saturday, April 29.  Abby Searfoss and Monique Shetayh defeated Kellie Chamberlain and Ashley Hower of Bucks County Communtiy College, 6-4 and 6-1, while Shawn Robertson and Ryan Fulcomer defeated Nick Luczyszyn and Greg Schaffer, also of Bucks CCC, 7-5 ; 6-4.

“This team is an absolute joy to be with,” said Coach Jack Master. “They have all of the ingredients for success: talent, personality, humility and a desire to improve. They are excellent representatives for our college and athletic department.”

The team consists of three returning members: Charles Miles of Philipsburg, Shawn Robertson of East Stroudsburg, and Anne Walsh of Staten Island, N.Y. , and five new members: Jordan Loomis of Bechtelsville, Ryan Fulcomer of Effort, Abby Searfoss of Northampton, Monique Shetayh of Walnutport and Shaun Lally of Allentown. Last year, Shawn Robertson and Biagio Trama won the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association (PCAA) Championship in doubles.

Master believes Miles, Robertson and Walsh’s embrace of the new team made the new members truly feel welcome. The team’s greatest challenge, he said, is to continue to improve and not become complacent with their success.

“Coaching tennis at Northampton has been a joy for me for the past twenty-nine years,” Master said. “I promise my players at the start of each season that they will learn about the game, improve their skills, and, with a little luck, win a few matches but most importantly have a good time in the process. This team has met those goals.

Charles Miles completes his two years at NCC with a 13-3 record playing at the #1 position. He finished the 2006 dual meet season a perfect 8-0.
