COMPENSATION FROM THE PUBLIC-PRIVATE GERMAN INDEMNITY FUND

According to Deutsche Presse-Agentur former Nazi slave labourers have so far received 1.8 billion euros (1.7 billion dollars) in long-awaited compensation from the public-private German indemnity fund.

About one million elderly former slave and forced labourers in 73 countries received compensation, with the biggest amount of 546 million euros for 108,000 claimants going to the Jewish Claims Conference.

Poland had (351,000 claimants, 492 million euros) while Ukraine (275,000 claimants, 327 million euros).

Smaller sums involved Belarus and Baltic states. The average sum received is between 5,000 marks (2,222 dollars) and 15,000 marks each.
