People to Watch in 1995

Katell Keineg

songwriter

One of the most talented songwriters to emerge on the Irish music scene in recent years, Katell Keineg has just released her debut album O Seasons O Castles on Elektra records. The album was produced by Fred Maher, whose last project was Lou Reed's hugely acclaimed CD New York

Keineg, 28, who has lived in Ireland for a number of years, was born in Brittany where her father, a poet and political activist, still lives. She studied law at the London School of Economics before leaving to embark on a busking career which took her all over Europe. Last year she spent a period in New York where she sang on rock legend Iggy Pop's latest album. She returned to Dublin to record her own in Windmill Lane studios.

She has just completed an extensive tour of Europe and returned from eight shows in the US, including three days in Los Angeles where she hooked up with blues legend John Lee Hooker. Her album recieved four star reviews from the international music media.

She has done extensive media interviews including a feature length interview in the influential Rolling Stone magazine. A new single will be released in January. She has also been invited to appear in New York's Carnegie Hall for a concert with former Talking Heads singer David Byrne, Natalie Merchant and Jimmie Dale Gilmour. Definitely one to watch.
